U.S. Endangered Species Act Enforced

Abstract

The U.S. Department of Interior's
Office of Endangered Species is cracking
down on the interstate sale and shipment
of endangered species for commercial purposes*
without a permit, as evidenced by
the recent confiscation of a pair of Turquisine
and Scarlet-chested Parrakeets at a
Miami, Florida airport. The birds, shipped
by A.F.A. member Robert Graves of Kentucky
(who was unaware of their endangered
status), were turned over to a Miami
zoo, although the Scarlet-chested Parrakeets
were later returned to their owner.
Mr. Graves was subsequently visited by
agents from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service and the Kentucky Fish and Game
Commission, however, no further action
was taken.
